Mindanawon wins two Palanca awards

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/02 September) – A social development worker who does research work for the Davao City-based Kyabaan is this year’s winner of two Palanca Awards for Literature. Ferdinand Balino, 43, won 1st prize for his Hiligaynon short-story, “Kanamit Gid Sang Arroz Valenciana” (Oh how delicious Arroz Valenciana is)  and 3rd prize winner for Cebuano short story, “Mga Mananap sa Kagabhion” (Creatures in the Night).

Balino won his first Palanca in 2007, 2nd prize for Cebuano short story, “Absent, Ma’am,” his first ever entry.

Before Kyabaan, Balino was among the staff writers of the now defunct Media Mindanao News Service.

Balino received the two awards evening of September 1 at the Manila Peninsula in Makati.

The Hiligaynon story is also the first entry in that language of this Mindanawon of Ilocano origins. (MindaNews)
