Since 2002, the Minfruit Council has conducted more than 100 seminars on banana and other fruit crops in major fruit-growing areas in Mindanao, benefiting more than 8,000 small farmers. The Minfruit Council is being assisted by USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program and the Department of Agriculture (DA), to support the development of the local fruit industry through technology dissemination, market linkage and the strengthening of grower associations. Not a soul stirred along the 35-kilometer stretch between Datu Piang in Maguindanao and Midsayap in North Cotabato as we passed Sunday, March 4. The evacuees are spread in several areas in both towns.

Muslims, have fled their villages amid a growing tension between government
soldiers and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the area. Many evacuees
brought their livestock with them to the evacuation centers. The livestock is

Midsayap, North Cotabato-- At seven days old, this baby girl is the youngest
evacuee in Datu Piang town, Maguindanao as of Sunday, March 4. Her uncle,
Bong Modal, said his family including the child's mother fled to Datu Piang to
escape the growing tension between the Philippine military and the Moro
Islamic Liberation Front in the adjoining town of Midsayap, North Cotabato.
Modal said her niece was still three days old when they evacuated to Datu
Piang. The baby survived a night sleeping on the banks of Rio Grande River.
